History

FIT supports OGS in the organization and management of the Trieste Laboratory on Quantitative Sustainability project, a laboratory dedicated to research on quantitative sustainability, widespread among the scientific and humanistic institutions of Friuli Venezia Giulia.

FIT becomes the administrative secretariat of the International Union of Pure and Applied Physics, the only international physics organization that is organized and run by the physics community itself to assist in the worldwide development of physics, to foster international cooperation in physics, and to help in the application of physics toward solving problems of concern to humanity.

Professor Stefano Fantoni resumes his role as president of FIT.

FIT is among the sponsors of SIER, a summer school aimed at students interested in approaching major issues in the field of renewable energy science and utilization.

Dr. Andrea Vacchi is president of FIT from December 2011 until 2016.

In February 2009, prof. Stefano Fantoni succeeds to the historic president prof. Paolo Budinich. Fantoni will hold the position until December 2011 and thereafter resume it in 2016.

With TWAS, the Foundation promotes the Consortium on Science Technology and Innovation for the South (COSTIS), signed by the Foreign Ministers of the G77 and China on 23 September 2006 in New York.

FIT is also active in the dissemination of scientific culture with the publication of the periodical Scienza@Trieste.it in the Triveneto area (North-Eastern Italy ) as a scientific supplement to the daily newspapers Il Piccolo and Messaggero Veneto. The magazine is published quarterly with a 120-page format. It is aimed at a non-specialist audience and featured popular science articles on a wide range of topics, from physics to mathematics, from biology to medicine.

With the support of FIT, the activity of Elettra Sincrotrone Trieste, the research center specializing in the generation of synchrotron light and high-quality free-electron lasers, begins.

FIT contributes to the establishment of the Laboratorio dell’Immaginario Scientifico, an interactive and multimedia science museum, which aims to promote and disseminate scientific and technological culture.

FIT is a major contributor to the establishment of the Academy of Sciences for the Developing World (TWAS) and the International Centre for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (ICGEB).

The Citizen’s Committee becomes the International Foundation for the Progress and Freedom of Science (FIT); President Prof. Paolo Budinich, who will hold the position until 2009.

With the crucial contribution of the Citizens’ Committee, the International School for Advanced Studies (SISSA) is established.

With the crucial contribution of the Citizens’ Committee, under the auspices of the IAEA and with the financial support of the Italian government, the Abdus Salam International Centre for Theoretical Physics (ICTP) is founded.

Establishment of the Citizen Committee for the candidacy of Trieste as the seat of the International Physics Center of the IAEA (International Atomic Energy Agency); the Citizen Committee will make a decisive contribution to the birth and growth of the Trieste System, starting from the ICTP.
